Pink October: Follow these Healthy Diets which can reduce breast cancer risk
According to the National Cancer Institute (INCA), cancer is the main global health problem, with breast tumors as the second most frequent type. With the incidence and mortality from the disease increasing more and more, scientific studies have shown that good eating habits help to prevent different types of disease, as stated by nutritionist and specialist in Oncology, Marcella Tamiozzo. According to the professional, the consumption of foods rich in antioxidants (substances that protect cells from damage caused by free radicals) and fibers contribute to the prevention of the disease. These substances are mainly present in foods of plant origin, such as fruits and vegetables.
“And there are also foods related to the development of breast cancer, such as the consumption of red meats and fried meats, in addition to excess fats. This is due to the use of estrogen hormones in cattle or the mutagens created during meat cooking, or even high temperature cooking, which promotes an increase in the formation of carcinogenic compounds. The consumption of bad fats (such as saturated fats and trans fats) increases susceptibility to inflammatory and oxidative processes.
Therefore, a more natural diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and low in red meat, processed meats and bad fats, as well as industrialized products rich in chemical additives (such as soft drinks, powdered juices), can contribute to the prevention of breast cancer”, highlights the professor of the Nutrition course at Estácio.
Foods that help prevent breast cancer
According to Marcella, one of the examples of food aimed at preventing breast cancer is the Mediterranean diet. Because it is rich in polyphenols and fibers, it acts to prevent the appearance of cancer cells, mainly due to its ability to prevent oxidative and inflammatory processes.
Among the foods that act as a preventive against breast cancer are:
Broccoli:
Broccoli contains sulforaphane, an excellent antioxidant that has anti-cancer properties;
Cinnamon:
Cinnamon helps relieve inflammation, as well as blocking the spread and growth of cancer cells;
Olive oil:
Studies have revealed that individuals who consumed more of the Olive oil reduced their risk of developing breast cancer;
Golden flaxseed:
According to studies, Golden Flaxseeds promote the death of cancer cells;
Carrot:
A study carried out by the Harvard School of Public Health, in the United States, with pre-menopausal women, found that consuming two servings of the vegetable every day reduces the risk of developing the disease by up to 17%, due to the presence of the antioxidant beta-carotene. , present in this food, which prevents the formation of free radicals.
Grape:
Rich in flavonoids, substances that help slow the growth of cancer cells in the body.
Good nutrition during treatment
The nutritionist specializing in Oncology also highlights that those who are undergoing treatment against the disease should also pay attention to the quality of food. “It is important that the patient has the follow-up of a nutritionist to strengthen the immune system, contributing to a good response to treatment. In these cases, foods that are also a source of antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables, as well as good protein sources such as eggs, fish and legumes, for example, can help in the elimination of free radicals and also in the production of enzymes and antibodies. What also helps is to avoid foods that favor the development of the disease, such as red meat, processed meats, fatty foods such as fried foods, foods with many chemical additives such as industrialized powders or tablets, soft drinks, ready-to-eat frozen foods, powdered juices, among others”, he reveals.
