Does Cannabis Sativa plant cure cancer? What the medical study says about the anticancer property of Cannabis Sativa plant?
- 2 million new breast cancer were diagnosed per year
- The month of October was defined as a banner for this fight and awareness for the control of breast cancer - “Pink October”
- Cannabinoids, active components of Cannabis Sativa and its derivatives, have anticancer action.
According to data from NCA (National Cancer Institute), about 66 thousand new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed per year in the last three years (2020-2022) in Brazil. This represents a rate of 44 cases per 100,000 women. Worldwide, there are about 2 million new diagnoses per year. Despite being little known information, the disease can affect both men and women – the incidence, however, is much higher in women.
In order to inform, an international movement of awareness for the control of breast cancer was created, and the month of October was defined as a banner for this fight. “Pink October” is, therefore, an annual campaign carried out worldwide with the intention of alerting women and society in general about the early diagnosis of breast cancer, which can increase the chances of curing the cancer disease by more than 90% patient.
The disease is characterized by different pathological and molecular subtypes that present many clinical outcomes, therefore, there are several treatments, such as: surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and biological therapy. Although some are highly successful, certain tumors are resistant to conventional therapies and a considerable number of them relapse.
A relatively new treatment – and which has become a safe alternative with practically zero toxicity, guaranteeing the patient's quality of life – is performed with Medicinal Cannabis. Studies carried out over the last decade prove that cannabinoids (CBD), active components of Cannabis Sativa and its derivatives, have anticancer action.
“CBD can prevent the tumor from growing and metastasizing, according to a study published by Dr. Sean McAllister¹. In the article, he reports findings on the cumulative effect of CBD in blocking the proliferation of breast cancer. Some of these studies indicated that the substance works by deactivating the Id-1 gene, responsible for this type of cancer”, points out the medical director of Thronus Medical, Dr. Mariana Maciel.
THC works by helping to lessen the side effects of chemotherapy, such as nausea, vomiting, body aches, and bringing an appetite – something that treatment makes go away. “The well-being of this patient should be our main objective, quality of life is essential. And THC allows the improvement of several common annoyances during treatment ", points out Dr. Mariana
The use of these drugs can only be done under medical prescription. Dosage and other guidelines must be determined by the prescribing physician, who must maintain continuous monitoring.
